St Patricks senior team travelled to Antrim for a league encounter against St Comghall’s on Sunday. Fielding several stars of the minor side Lisburn set out to match Antrims physical approach from the start and this was underlined by Hugh McGurnaghan’s teeth shuddering fair shoulder in the opening minute. Territorially Lisburn dominated a highly contested first half and opened the scoring through full forward Paul Anderson who cheekily back heeled a goal from wide of the small square with the defence and keeper expecting him to dip for the ball. Anderson converted a point from play and then Eoin Fay smashed the ball spectacularly into the roof of the net from 15 yards. Antrim endeavoured to get back into the game but never looked like breeching the St Patricks defence which was being superbly marshalled by Brendan Dornan. As the half drew on Lisburn continued to pepper the Antrim goal but only had a further Ciaran Fay point to show for their endeavours missing 11 convertible chances. Right on half time Antrim broke free and scored a well made goal to leave the scoring at 1-2 to 2-2 in favour of St Patrick’s. The second half was a continuation of the first with the locals dominant with possession and territory but unable to convert the numerous chances created whilst the defence restricted Antrim to shooting points from distance. Tomas Fay was having a colossal game and gave a master class in catching and distributing the ball effectively. Against the run of play a high punt into the Lisburn box caused confusion with the ball ending up in the Lisburn net. Antrim felt there was a chance to pull off an upset but reckoned without Tomas Fay who cleanly caught and passed on the resulting kick out. Two passes later and Fay received the ball back and pointed from 35 yards to seal the victory 2-5 to 2-7 in Lisburn’s favour. On a day when the forward line left their shooting boots at home the Lisburn side have their defence of McCrory,Beeton, Doran,Burns,Catney,McGurnaghan and McMullan to thank for this hard earned victory.
Scorers for St Patrick’s: Eoin Fay and Paul Anderson 1-2 each; Ciaran Fay 0-2 and Tomas Fay 0-1.
Man of Match :Tomas Fay simply immense performance from Lisburn’s midfielder.
